Château Léoville Barton
As fines wines go, Bruno Colin is a new kid on the block. Created by Colin in 2003, the Cotes de Baune vineyard produced its first vintage in 2004. Even if the wine remains relatively new in international circles, the vines most certainly are not; history traces a vineyard on the Chassagne-Montrachet terroir since 281, planted by Roman Emperor (and fine wine lover) Probus! Bruno Colin himself is not new to winemaking either: he is part of the renowned Colin-Deléger family and worked for 10 years alongside his father prior to going it alone.
Bravo Bruno!
With only a tiny 8-hectare amount of land to work with, Bruno produces a phenomenal range of wine – 19 at last count. The whites are what are interesting here: an astonishing 10 Premiers Crus in white are produced along with three Premiers Crus in red. Interestingly, the vines are spread over five appellations of the Côte de Beaune region: Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin, Santenay and Maranges, undoubtedly creating havoc at harvest time! Clearly no stranger to blending, Bruno balances each wine beautifully, creating a patchwork of smooth flavours where each wine tells its own story. Farming is primarily organic, and each wine is aged with traditional vinification methods, in new oak barrels. Production is set at around 60,000 bottles, just 5,000 cases for all wines.
Batard-Montrachet looking good
Critics rate the Batard-Montrachet wine very highly – La Revue des Vins de France, France’s fine wine bible gave the 2014 vintage a superb 18/20. As investable opportunities go, buyers should note that this is a wine that so far has trended upwards, and has overtaken other Chardonnays from the Batard-Montrachet appellation. However, with such a youthful product, particularly the red, only time will tell how Bruno Colin will perform in the investible fine wine arena. Liv-ex is so far, not considering it on their radar, however, Bruno’s expertise coupled with his consistently excellent product could mean that it will only be a matter of time before this wine skyrockets.
Notable facts and vintages
  • Domaine Bruno Colin Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru ranks fourth “Most Expensive” wine in Batard-Montrachet according to wine-searcher in Q2 2019.
  • For more value, investors might look to First Growths such as 2015 Domaine Bruno Colin Chassagne-Montrachet with global prices nearly doubling in the two years following release.
  • With four owners sharing a mere 50 acres of old vines (planted in 1949) in Puligny Montrachet Les Demoiselles, it is no surprise quantities are scarce and prices are high for First Growth Domaine Bruno Colin Les Demoiselles.
