Burgundy wines are rich, varied and a testament to their terroir. They are wines with great passion, filled with history and tantalise the tastebuds of all who are lucky enough to drink them. But there is one Burgundy wine that stands out from the rest – Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüe. Rivalled only by Romanee-Conti in terms of fame, there is no doubt that de Vogue is a collectors wine.

A 12-hectare property producing nine wines (with five Grand Crus); undoubtedly the Georges’ jewel in the crown is the Musigny. Over 70% of the vines are planted for these wines, which systematically finish in the mid-low 90s for both the Chardonnays and the Pinot Noirs (excepting the superb 2008 Grand Cru Cuvee Vieille Vignes Pinot Noir which earned a massive 97/100 on aggregate score). The Musigny 2005 is trading at a huge €1,161 a bottle, up 400% from its release price. The charmingly named Cuvee Les Amoureuses (1er Cru) 2016, accumulated an average score of 94/100 and is currently selling at a €813 a bottle, rivalling the price of a Cheval Blanc for the same year.

Obviously, winemaking is in de Vogue’s DNA, as the domaine is currently being run by the 20th generation of de Vogues. Today, the vineyard has the Count’s two daughters at the helm, who remain very active in the day to day running of the estate.

Investment in Burgundy wine is on the up and up, with Asia turning towards the region. With prices for Bordeaux wines skyrocketing, Burgundy is enjoying its moment in the sun, with investments up by almost 24% in 2018 alone. As one of the most important producers in the area, those looking to add to their cellar should consider a bottle of de Vogue. Investors should look to vintages pre 1970 or post-1990.

Curiously, Vogue declassified their Musigny from 1993 to 2015, until they felt certain the vines were old enough to produce wines worthy of their Grand Cru status. As a result, Musigny Blanc now commands prices comparable to Montrachet.
